Mark A. Peletier TU Eindhoven, Dept of Mathematics and Computer Science, m.a.peletier@tue.nl http://www.win.tue.nl/~mpeletie My scientific interests center on the links between differential equations and applications. In biological systems the spatial aspects of living cells, tissues, and organisms are comparatively less understood, and differential equations provide ways of investigating these. One recent interest is the issue of stability of aggregates such as lipid bilayers. Coherent structures of molecules without any covalent bonding; why do these free molecules aggregate into a structure that has solid-like properties? We use methods from singular limits in reaction-diffusion theory to understand the properties of these large-scale surface-like structures. Other interests include for instance Metabolic Control Analysis and thermodynamics - both in a spatially heterogeneous setting - and the coupling of particle dynamics and continuum mechanics.
