This was followed by a PhD at the UvA (topic: Site 3 of oxidative phosphorylation, promotor: Prof. Dr EC Slater). Subsequently I did postdoctoral work in Finland (topic: mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, with emphasis on the role of the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase) and at the department of Microbiology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (topic: hydrogenase and biological production of hydrogen). After that I moved on to the department of Plant Physiology at the VU, and later to the department of Molecular Cell Physiology (formerly Microbiology, also at the VU). My interests are the study of biological systems that link redox processes to ATP synthesis, trans-membrane transport and other energy-demanding reactions. These processes generally take place in and around membranes, and this membraneous organisation is essential for the mechanism of these processes. I have always been interested in application of quantitative methods and mathematical modelling to these problems. In my opinion it is impossible to assess the consequences of discoveries made in the study of individual processes for the functioning of the living cell without quantitative modelling. My main activities next to science are reading, listening to music (I don't like operette and free jazz, all other music is fine) and riding a bicycle (not fast, but far).
